Jaipur: The state govt announced Saturday that families of the seven students who were killed in the school building collapse in Jhalawar’s Piplodi village on July 25 have received financial assistance of Rs 12 lakh each under various heads.The Chief Minister’s office revealed the details late Friday night, with MoS disaster management and Jhalawar district in-charge, Ota Ram Dewasi, publicly sharing the information Saturday.Dewasi stated that the financial aid has been disbursed in a staggered manner over the last 50 days, with amounts given in five instalments totaling Rs 12 lakh. “The relief amount of Rs 12 lakh each has already been given to the bereaved families in five instalments over the past two months—Rs 4 lakh, Rs 5 lakh and three instalments of Rs one lakh each under different heads,” Dewasi said.Additionally, he mentioned that an extra Rs 1 lakh is anticipated to be released soon as part of the insurance claim for the school building.In response to questions about the delayed announcement, nearly two months after the tragedy, Dewasi claimed that the timing was influenced by “vested groups” attempting to tarnish the state govt’s image. He emphasised that the govt has been proactive in supporting the bereaved families amidst ongoing political tensions.The incident sparked significant political controversy, especially as Piplodi is situated in the stronghold of former Chief Minister and BJP national vice-president Vasundhara Raje. The issue was a focal point during the recent Rajasthan assembly session, where the Congress criticised Chief Minister Bhajan Lal Sharma for not visiting the village.Banswara MP Rajkumar Roat held public meetings in Jhalawar, advocating for a special financial package for the affected families, while Congress rebel Naresh Meena intensified pressure on the state govt for compensation.The tragedy led to heightened political exchanges, with both the ruling party and the opposition trading barbs. Dewasi defended the govt’s actions, asserting that the CM has shown great concern for the families and closely monitored the situation following the tragedy.Despite the gravity of the situation, many senior ministers, including deputy chief ministers Prem Chand Bairwa and Diya Kumari, have failed to visit the village, with only state education minister Madan Dilawar and agriculture minister Kirori Lal Meena making appearances there.According to sources, the Jhalawar district’s status as Raje’s political bastion—represented for the fifth time in Parliament by her son, MP Dushyant Singh—prompted the CM and senior BJP members to maintain a cautious distance to avoid political friction.
