BHU receives patent for world's first biofeedback-enabled neck exercise device

Varanasi: A product of collaborative research between Banaras Hindu University (BHU) and IIT-BHU has received a patent for the “biofeedback-enabled neck isometric exercise device with programming and muscle strength measurement.”This is the world’s first device designed to aid in the rehabilitation of patients suffering from neck pain and disorders with “biofeedback.” This invention was developed by Shubhendu Shekhar Pandey, Assistant Professor, department of physiotherapy, orthopedics, Institute of Medical Sciences (IMS), BHU, in collaboration with Prof Neeraj Sharma from the School of Biomedical Engineering, IIT-BHU, and Pranshu Chandra Bhushan Singh Negi, a research scholar under Prof Sharma. “This is the world’s first device designed to aid in the rehabilitation of patients suffering from neck pain and disorders. Key features include a force-sensitive sensor-equipped headgear that measures force applied in various directions, an ergonomically designed chair to ensure correct posture, a real-time biofeedback system that provides information to both the patient and therapist via graphical display, two exercise protocols – hold-relax mode and continuous mode, and data recording and analysis to monitor patient progress,” Pandey said. This device will revolutionise rehabilitation methods in physiotherapy and orthopaedics. It would be beneficial not only for doctors and physiotherapists but also for researchers analysing muscle recovery, Pandey added. “This patent will encourage me further, and we are extremely pleased to enhance the reputation of BHU. This achievement will elevate the prominence of BHU and IIT-BHU in the fields of medical and technological innovation,” said Pandey.
