Surat: Umra police on Saturday registered an FIR against nine people, including a clerk of MTB Arts College and eight student activists associated with the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP).They are accused of allegedly abusing the then in-charge principal and conspiring to remove him from his post. The complaint, submitted on July 26, pertains to an incident that occurred on July 9.The FIR names the college clerk, Sagar Rana and student activists Deep Ghoghari, Ravi Mangroliya, Punit Acharya, Yoginath Lakshman, Malhar Goswami, Ganesh Pawar, Janvi Pawar, and Danil Barde alias Danial Gamit.The complaint was lodged by Rudresh Vyas, a professor of psychology at MTB Arts College, who was appointed as in-charge principal on June 17. Vyas was removed from the post following the protest on July 10. In the FIR, he alleged that the college clerk conspired with the student activists to force him out of his position.He alleged that the clerk had issued admission call letters to 8,000 applicants for just 222 vacant UG seats. The large turnout of applicants led to a protest by ABVP student leaders at the college. Vyas claimed that he was not allowed to leave his office from 1pm to 9pm on July 9, during which the students allegedly used abusive language in the presence of the police. Videos of the incident went viral on social media.The following day, Vyas said he visited Veer Narmad South Gujarat University (VNSGU) to discuss the matter. In the presence of top university officials, he alleged that ABVP leaders threatened him, saying, “They are ABVP leaders and he cannot do anything to them”.Vyas himself has a long association with ABVP, having served twice as president of the city unit.The FIR was filed under multiple sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).
