Hyderabad: The Central Crime Station (CCS) sleuths of Hyderabad booked the proprietor of a Mehdipatnam-based overseas consultancy for allegedly duping at least 17 aspiring students and job seekers of nearly 1 crore by promising student visas to Europe.Businessman Mohammed Kabir (48), a resident of Purani Haveli, lodged a complaint on Saturday stating that the accused, Fahad Bin Salam, owner of Global Horizons Consultancy, collected 22.3 lakh from him to secure admission for his son Mohammed Ashraf and nephew Mohammed Mushraf at the Budapest Metropolitan University in Hungary.Kabir informed the police that Salam widely advertised guaranteed overseas education, employment, and student visas. Convinced by glossy brochures and purported university tie-ups, the victims transferred money in multiple instalments to Salam’s bank account. Kabir alone remitted 1 lakh on May 15, 15.3 lakh on May 28 and 6 lakh on July 2 to Salam’s State Bank of India (SBI) account at the Dabeerpura branch. After repeated reminders, Salam issued payment invoices and admission letters allegedly from the Hungarian university, arranged Zoom interviews, and shared forged emails. However, the documents were found to be fake when the applicants verified them with the university.Salam shut his office at Safa Arcade in Mehdipatnam and went incommunicado from Aug 3, locking his Tolichowki flat and switching off his phones. A family member, who returned from Kuwait in Aug, could not provide details on the whereabouts of the accused, and lodged a missing person complaint regarding Salam at the Mehdipatnam police station.Apart from himself, Kabir named 15 others from the city as victims, alleging a collective loss of about 1 crore. Acting on the complaint, the CCS police registered a case under Sections 318(4) (cheating), 336(3) (forgery), 338 (forgery of valuable security, will, etc.), and 340(2) (using a forged document as a genuine one) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS). Police said efforts were on to trace Salam.
