Sri Lankan-born investor and entrepreneur Chamath Palihapitiya marked his 50th birthday with a deeply personal message to his children and a powerful tribute to the United States, the country he credits with giving him the opportunity to build a new life. Reflecting on his journey from growing up as a refugee in Canada to becoming a prominent Silicon Valley investor, Palihapitiya said his life would have been almost unimaginable to his parents when he was born in Sri Lanka in 1976.“I was born in Sri Lanka in 1976 in a country that, at the time, was about to enter a decades long civil war,” he wrote in a post shared on X.His father, who was stationed at the Sri Lankan High Commission in Canada, eventually sought refugee status after his life was threatened by militants. The family remained in Canada as refugees and, according to Palihapitiya, struggled financially. “We grew up on welfare,” he said, crediting his mother for holding the family together and continuing to move forward despite their circumstances.Palihapitiya also recalled starting work at Burger King at the age of 14, handing his wages to his parents to help support the family. One of his responsibilities, he said, was earning enough to help pay for their bus passes because they could not afford a car.Describing himself as a “loser” during his childhood, Palihapitiya said he eventually got his act together in his final year of school and gained admission to a “great university”. After graduating, he immigrated to the US and said he found an opportunity that changed the trajectory of his life.That experience forms the heart of his message about America.“Only in America is this possible,” Palihapitiya wrote, describing how he worked, paid taxes and remained in California because of his loyalty to the opportunities the state had provided him despite its problems.“I found my wife here. Had my kids here. Found my tribe here,” he said.Palihapitiya acknowledged that his journey was not without setbacks. He referred to deaths, divorce, financial difficulties and mistakes he had made along the way. But his advice was not to become consumed by those experiences. “Learn from them. Respect them. BUT MOVE ON,” he wrote.The entrepreneur then turned his reflection into an assertion of the American Dream.“We forget often and try to convince others it’s not true but America truly is the best country in the world,” he wrote. “Everything and anything is possible here. I can testify. Be grateful to be here.”For Palihapitiya, America’s appeal is not ultimately about wealth or professional success. He deliberately avoided discussing his accomplishments or fortune in his birthday message, saying those things ultimately “won’t matter”. Instead, he urged his children to focus on things within their control: being kind, having fun, doing meaningful work, finding their community, developing perspective, finding a good partner and living an adventure.“The first 50 years have been that for me – an incredible adventure,” he wrote.
