Israel on Wednesday said its military killed Muhammad Abu Alwan, identified by Israel as the head of Hamas’ finance department, in a strike in Khan Younis in southern Gaza.Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Defence Minister Israel Katz confirmed the killing in a joint statement, with Netanyahu also posting the statement on X. “A short while ago in Khan Younis, the IDF eliminated Hamas terrorist organization finance department head Muhammad Abu Alwan,” Netanyahu said in the post.Netanyahu and Katz praised the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) and Shin Bet for what they described as a “precise operation” targeting Hamas’ financial network.“We will continue to hunt down Hamas commanders and operatives, target its sources of funding, and destroy its terrorist infrastructure,” Netanyahu and Katz said in the joint statement.The Israeli leaders also said they would not allow Hamas to rebuild its capabilities and vowed to continue operations until the group “no longer exists in Gaza.”
Netanyahu, Katz vow continued action against Hamas
The killing comes as Israel continues to target Hamas’ leadership, financial network and infrastructure in Gaza. Katz has also warned Hamas against attempting to abduct an Israeli soldier or civilian.“If even one Israeli soldier or civilian is abducted,” Katz said, Gaza City would face further Israeli military action until the person was returned.The Israeli defence minister also said Israel would not withdraw from the so-called Yellow Line in Gaza as long as Hamas remains in the Strip and Gaza is not demilitarised.
