Varanasi: Six police personnel were suspended, while another five were sent to lines in connection with the death of a BJP worker in a police lathicharge in Ghazipur on Thursday. Ghazipur district police chief has made a formal request to the district magistrate to order a magisterial probe into the alleged police action.According to reports, a protest over power crisis at Nonhara police station turned violent around 1 am on Tuesday, when police baton-charged demonstrators, injuring 7-8 people, including BJP worker Siyaram Upadhyay, alias Jokhu Upadhyay (35) from Rukundipur. Siyaram later succumbed to his injuries, sparking outrage. His family has alleged that the police brutality led to his death and is demanding justice and legal action against the responsible officers.Taking cognizance of the incident, Ghazipur SP Iraj Raja suspended six police personnel, including SO Venkatesh Tiwari, SI Awadhesh Kumar Rai, head constable Nagendra Singh Yadav, constable Dheeraj Singh, Abhishek Pandey, and Rakesh Kumar, and put five personnel on line duty, including SI Kamlesh Gupta, SI Zulfikar Ali, constables Mulayam Singh, Raghavendra Mishra, and Rajesh Kumar. The SP said that allegations are being made that the youth died due to injuries in the police action. A post-mortem has been conducted and an investigation is underway. Legal action will be taken based on the findings.Upon receiving the news, former BJP district president Bijendra Singh and Rajesh Rai Baghi, who was also injured in the police action, arrived at the scene with their supporters. BJP district president Omprakash Rai, who visited the deceased’s village Rukundipur, said he was a dedicated BJP worker. Expressing grief, he said the entire party stands with the family and all their demands will be met by the party. He said a high-level investigation should be conducted with strict action against the guilty.Meanwhile, deputy inspector general of police, Varanasi Range, Vaibhav Krishna, conducted a review with the Ghazipur SP and other officials at Nonhara Police Station late Thursday.
