Belagavi: Tension flared in Kittur town on Friday when a clash broke out between Congress and BJP workers ahead of the upcoming Belagavi District Central Cooperative (BDCC) Bank elections. The situation escalated following an alleged attempt to abduct the Primary Krishi Pattina Sahakari Sangha (PKPS) secretary, who arrived to oversee the election process. The election to the BDCC Bank board of directors is scheduled for Oct 19. To participate, each PKPS must pass a resolution authorising one representative to vote. On Friday, the election at the Kittur PKPS was convened for this purpose. According to reports, Congress workers allegedly tried to force the secretary into a car to delay proceedings. BJP workers intervened, smashing the car’s windows and pulling out those inside. The altercation quickly turned physical, with workers from both parties grabbing collars and exchanging blows, while a large crowd gathered at the spot. Police personnel present struggled to control the situation but eventually managed to disperse the crowd. BJP workers alleged that Congress, facing a numerical disadvantage, attempted to stall the election by abducting the PKPS secretary, triggering chaos.
