Madhubani/Bettiah: Security along the India-Nepal border in Bihar has been stepped up after a mass jailbreak in Nepal triggered fears of fugitives slipping into Indian territory. Several prisoners, including foreign nationals, have already been arrested in coordinated operations in Madhubani and West Champaran districts. Madhubani SP Yogendra Kumar said on Friday that so far six escapees have been arrested in teh district. Those held include two Nepali nationals, two Nigerians, one Brazilian and a resident of Bihar identified as Gulzar (43). Police said the arrests were made during joint raids with the Sashastra Seema Bal (SSB) in Ladaniya, Madhwapur and Basopatti police station areas. During patrol in Madhwapur, police caught a suspicious man later identified as a fugitive prisoner from a Nepal jail. Based on intelligence inputs, two escaped Nepali prisoners were captured from Chhapki village under Ladaniya police station by inspector Anup Kumar and his team while Basopatti police arrested three more. Jaynagar DSP Raghav Dayal confirmed the arrests and said all were being interrogated. Intelligence Bureau and state police teams are probing whether a wider cross-border nexus is helping the fugitives. Meanwhile, in West Champaran, the SSB’s 21st battalion apprehended another escaped Nepali prisoner attempting to cross into India at Valmikinagar. Bagaha SP Sushant Kumar Saroj said, “During questioning, he was identified as Niwesh Kumar, son of Ravindra Mahato, a resident of Gore village under Pipra police station in East Champaran. He had been imprisoned in Nawalparasi jail for 8 months under the NDPS Act. After questioning by Valmikinagar police, he was handed over to the Nepal Armed Police Force posted at Triveni.” Saroj added, “Taking advantage of the unrest in Nepal, hundreds of Nepalese prisoners escaped from a jail in Nawalparasi district on Wednesday. As soon as we received information about the escape, special surveillance was increased at the Valmikinagar Indo-Nepal border. Patrolling has been intensified in the border areas to ensure that no escaped prisoner can seek refuge in India.”
