Ara: A Patna resident who posed as a seasoned cyber fraudster and duped several people of their hard-earned money was arrested by the Cyber Police of Bhojpur district on Saturday.The accused, Rahul Kumar Gupta of Begampur locality in Patna City, had tricked multiple victims, including Amrendra Kumar of Ara, from whom he fraudulently withdrew Rs 99,999.According to a press release issued from the Bhojpur SP’s office on Saturday evening, Gupta’s modus operandi was exposed during interrogation. “The cyber fraud used to call victims and lure them into his trap by asking them to install a particular app on their smartphone. After gaining access to the device, he obtained the victims’ bank details such as bank name, account number, ATM PIN, net banking password and transaction history. He then withdrew money from their accounts and transferred the amounts to another person by promising them a commission, before finally withdrawing it for his own use,” the release said.The operation was led by DSP Sneh Setu, who also serves as the SHO of the Bhojpur Cyber police station.As per the FIR lodged by complainant Amrendra Kumar of Maruti Nagar under Ara Town police station, “The cyber fraud made me install an app on my phone under the pretext of making a delivery payment from an alleged courier service. He then withdrew Rs 99,999 in two transactions from my account.”The case, lodged on July 20, 2024 with Bhojpur Cyber police station, was finally solved on Saturday.Police also recovered incriminating material from Gupta’s possession, including a QR scanner, two passbooks, two chequebooks and a register containing the bank details of several victims.
