Prayagraj: The Uttar Pradesh govt has approved the proposal to designate several of the city’s iconic localities as ‘Heritage Mohallas’. These areas, steeped in history, tradition will now be officially recognised for their unique cultural and historical value.The proposal, submitted by the Prayagraj Municipal Corporation, received govt approval, clearing the way for detailed surveys and plans to ensure that these localities retain their traditional identities while promoting them as heritage destinations. The designated neighbourhoods include Loknath, Malviya Nagar, and Daraganj.These localities are alive with a dialect that speaks of an older, slower era, and homes that still reflect the timeless way of life of the city’s original residents. A visit to these mohallas feels like stepping back in time. In Loknath, one can still experience the old-world charm through the distinct food, the dialect, and the way people go about their daily lives in true Allahabadi fashion. Similarly, Malviya Nagar, named after the revered freedom fighter and educationist Madan Mohan Malaviya, is a neighbourhood reflecting a bygone intellectual spirit. Daraganj, located near the Sangam, continues to retain its traditional aura, where the modern age has made little impact on the way of life of its residents.City Mayor, Ganesh Kesarwani, made the official announcement during the Municipal Corporation’s meeting.He said that proposal was submitted to the govt, and after receiving approval, next step would be conducting a fresh survey in these localities to assess what can be done to preserve and develop them further.He added that a plan will be drafted based on the survey, which will then be sent back to the govt for final approval. The Mayor also outlined the vision for these heritage mohallas. To bring more unity and coherence to these areas, all buildings within the mohallas could be painted in a similar colour scheme, providing a visual harmony . Additionally, specific features that make these areas unique—such as traditional architecture, historical landmarks, and local markets—will be showcased and promoted. The idea is to develop these areas not only as preserved localities but as cultural landmarks that attract tourists and celebrate Prayagraj’s heritage.Adding to the historical weight of the initiative, the site of Phaansi Neem, a poignant reminder of the city’s role in India’s freedom struggle where around 400 Indians were hanged, will also be included in the heritage programme. This location, where numerous freedom fighters were executed during British rule, will now be officially recognised as a heritage site, ensuring that the sacrifices made here are remembered and honoured for generations to come.
