KBA objects to police action against advocates | Kanpur News

Kanpur: Kanpur Bar Association and the Lawyers Association in a communique sent to the police commissioner on Friday raised objections to the arrest of several advocates, claiming the actions taken against them were prejudiced and illegal.Indeevar Bajpai and Dinesh Verma, presidents of the two associations, taking cognisance of a press release issued by the police department, stated that the police had tagged a gang as inter-ranged gang-916. Out of the 20 members of the gang, 16 are advocates, with five serving as office- bearers of the two associations.They stated that the reports against the advocates were two to three years old and if they (advocates) had committed any crime, the police officers posted at those police stations must have supported them. They questioned why the advocates had not been made accused.Similarly, when the alleged accused advocates were charged with grabbing and selling the government land, the custodians of those lands were government officials, they said. They questioned why these officials had not been made accused, asserting that without their support, the advocates could not have sold or grabbed the land.In recent developments, the police department has been receiving complaints against advocates and registering FIRs against them, subjecting them to mental torture.The association leaders pointed out that in previous meetings with the office-bearers of the two lawyers’ bodies, it was decided that a joint committee would be constituted to first consider reports against advocates and, if found correct, FIRs would be registered against them. However, this process has not been adopted, and actions against advocates are being taken with deliberate intention. They demanded to constitute a committee to reduce bitterness between the police and the advocates.
