Mangaluru: The Palakkad railway division gave in-principle approval for a new LPG siding at Panambur, New Mangalore Port, proposed by AEGIS Vopak. Once completed, the facility is expected to handle one million tonnes of LPG annually, equivalent to two rakes per day. Officials said the detailed engineering scale plan is currently under examination. At present, only 7% of LPG is transported by rail, compared to 30% by pipeline and 63% by road. Rail transport is nearly four times cheaper than road, and shifting bulk LPG movement to rail is expected to reduce costs for industries, enhance public safety, and generate substantial revenue for Indian Railways. The proposal was discussed at the business development meet held at the divisional railway manager’s office, Palakkad Division, on Friday.
