People’s representatives seek more relief for bereaved families

Hassan: Former PM and JD(S) supremo HD Deve Gowda, who called on the injured undergoing treatment at Hassan Institute of Medical Sciences, enquired about their health on Saturday.Gowda, who arrived in Hassan from Bengaluru, said the incident should not have happened, and “it is particularly distressing that most of the deceased were engineering students”. He appealed to the state and central govts to increase the compensation from a humanitarian perspective.Meanwhile, opposition leader R Ashoka said that among the deceased, a majority were young people, and their families are poor. “I do not engage in politics regarding relief measures. I did not come here to do politics. I will speak with the state govt about this. I urge for more compensation to be provided to the families of the deceased,” he said.Ashoka also said locals have demanded installation of speed-breakers (humps). “I will speak with the officials concerned in this regard. During such gathering of people in future, there should be more police security,” he suggested.A day after the tragedy, a host of political party leaders and representatives of the govt visited the town, expressing grief over the incident.BJP legislator CT Ravi, Hassan MP Shreyas Patel, and legislators HD Revanna, HP Swaroop Prakash, and Suraj Revanna rushed to the spot soon after the incident.JD(S) Youth Wing state president Nikhil Kumaraswamy and former MLC MA Gopalaswamy visited the villages of the deceased to console the families. They also visited hospitals to enquire about the health of the injured.
