Vadodara: Seven workers suffered burns at the Amul Dairy premises in Anand on Friday evening, after welding sparks ignited biogas that had accumulated due to a leak in the biogas plant on the dairy’s premises. Officials said the workers who suffered burns were carrying out welding work. “There is a biogas plant on the Amul Dairy premises, where workers hired by an outsourcing agency were carrying out welding work. Seven of these workers suffered burns due to the accident. All were rushed to Shree Krishna Hospital in Karamsad for treatment,” Dr Mayur Parmar, prant officer and sub-divisional magistrate of Anand, told TOI. Based on his discussions with the doctors treating the workers, Parmar said none of the workers are critical. “Of the seven, one has suffered major burns while six suffered minor burns. All of them are conscious and their conditions are not life-threatening,” he told TOI. Officials said that while their priority now is treatment for the injured workers, the reasons for the accident will be investigated. Amul Dairy’s managing director Amit Vyas told TOI that the biogas balloon near the effluent treatment plant (ETP) of the dairy was undergoing annual maintenance when the accident happened. “We carry out preventive maintenance every year. Workers of the contractor were doing this and the collected gas in the balloon had been extracted. We have reports that a spark led to the accident. We will be investigating to know the exact cause,” Vyas told TOI, adding that the work was being carried out under the supervision of a safety officer.
