Thiruvananthapuram: Three senior citizens residing alone were cheated out of Rs 1.40 crore in three different online frauds in Thiruvananthapuram.They were deceived by promises of lucrative returns through online trading. One of the victims was a Kallattumukku-based doctor, aged 68 years. He was cheated out of Rs 17.75 lakh. A 70-year-old woman residing at Muttada lost Rs 97 lakh and another Vazhuthacaud-based woman, aged 69, lost Rs 25.52 lakh.The victims were experienced in trading and were impressed when the accused shared accurate tips to trade wisely.The modus operandi in all the cases was the same. The accused shared some links about online trading on WhatsApp and later contacted the victims, offering free online courses. The victims told TOI that the accused dealt with them professionally and the online classes were also conducted professionally.The victims were directed to invest a small amount initially, and huge returns were given to win their trust. Motivated by this, the victims increased their investment amounts. Later, they were not allowed to withdraw profits but were compelled to invest more.Seeing more messages of gaining huge amounts, the victims continued investing money. However, despite many days passing, they were not allowed to withdraw it. When the accused demanded lakhs as tax, the victims started suspecting them and approached the police.The city cyber police began an investigation after registering a case under section 66 (D) of the Information Technology (Amendment) Act-2008 and sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita 318 (4) for cheating and 319 (2) for criminal breach of trust.
