Kalaburagi: A third semester engineering student in Kalaburagi, Bhagyashri Chitaguppa, 20, died by suicide, hanging herself at her residence on Friday, after her mother was unable to pay the semester fees in Kalaburagi city. Bhagyashri, a resident of Taj Sultanpur in Kalaburagi, hanged herself when no one was at home. Her mother, Mahananda Chitaguppa, who works as an anganwadi teacher, revealed that her daughter secured admission at a private engineering college in the city by paying Rs 1.2 lakh for the first year. While the first-year fee was paid, she could not afford the second-year fee, which is said to have led to the girl’s tragic decision. In her complaint to the police, Mahananda Chitaguppa stated, “My daughter Bhagyashri got admission to the private engineering college, for which I objected, saying that I cannot bear that much fees as I am the only breadwinner in the house with another girl child. However, I managed to pay the first-year fee but could not arrange the fee for the second year. Sept 10 was the last date to pay the II year fee, and I left home to work, saying I will manage to pay it in another couple of days. My second daughter also left for school on Friday morning. Within a couple of hours, I came to know from my neighbour that Bhagyashri had hanged herself in the house.” Chowk Police are investigating the case.
