Gurgaon: A 20-year-old delivery rider with Zomato out to hand over a packet of food died after being hit by a truck on Southern Peripheral Road (SPR) around Friday midnight.Around 12.10am, Vikas was on his way to deliver an order, navigating the SPR near Vatika Chowk. As he slowed down to take a U-turn — a common manoeuvre for riders weaving through the city’s roads — a rashly driven truck crashed into him from the side. The impact was devastating. Vikas’s bike got lodged in the front right tyre of the truck, and the delivery agent was fatally crushed.Sudhir Sharma, who happened to be nearby, was left shocked. “It was a horrific scene. I saw the truck crushing the biker under its wheels. Many Zomato riders gathered around and tried to help him, but he had already died by then. His head was crushed,” Sharma said.The truck driver, instead of stopping to help, abandoned the loaded vehicle and fled the scene. A police team arrived quickly, impounded the truck, and began a search for the driver, who remained at large till late on Saturday evening.An FIR was registered against the unidentified driver under BNS sections related to rash driving and causing death by negligence at Badshahpur police station.Vikas’s body was moved to the mortuary around 2am, and his family in UP was notified soon after.The incident sparked calls for safer roads. Many of Vikas’s colleagues protested at the accident scene and demanded immediate arrest of the truck driver.
